Why Personal Narratives Enhance A Brand

Business Points of Performance [BizPoP #8]:  Why Personal Narrative Will Enhance Your Brand

Video Length  – 13:09

Telling a strong personal narrative is a critical component to creating a memorable and attractive brand.

PERSONNAL NARRATIVE is the process of unearthing life stories and experiences to find core values and beliefs which shape you and the work you do. Personal narrative helps people to know who you are rather than first hearing about what you do.

And, more importantly, personal narrative leads people to relate better with you and to have greater trust because your ‘real,’ not just another business consultant, doctor, CPA, photographer, etc.

How do you start to think about your personal narrative and find those stories that truly reflect what you most want others to hear and see? This seems to be the tough part because so many of us continue to focus in on facts rather than getting to the heart of the story.

What’s the heart of the story? It’s the raw truth and emotion with which you tell the story. And you have to dig deep. But it’s worth it because it’s your truth and how you feel – how you lived or are living it – that creates a connection with those who hear your story.

And connection with others is what we all seek.

Here’s the thing then:

To find the stories that best reflect our life experiences and which best inform our personal narratives, it’s necessary to look back into the past as well as looking at the present. It is important to find that which is unique to you but which also is familiar to others so that they can relate to it. Not an easy task but crucial if the personal narrative you unearth and write will be the basis for a memorable and influential brand. If you are willing to rediscover the people, events, places, failures, achievements, etc. of your life, you will have pure branding treasure in your hand!

It was a fascinating place to visit, Susan. I think about it and my time there often as it left such an impression upon me. Really makes one wonder what brings people to places that are more remote. What were they searching for? What was I searching for to yearn to visit Marfa? Hmm… If you ever do get the chance to go, do!
