Honoring Routines

“Most of us, I suppose, have had at one time or another the impulse to leave behind our daily routines and responsibilities and seek out, temporarily, a new life.”
                                                                                                            ~ Alice Steinbach, Author

For each of us, it’s highly likely that we can point to a year or time in our lives when we know this to be true – it’s more comfortable to be where we are, doing what we are, and with those that are right there with us. And yet it’s uncomfortable, too. There are those proverbial ‘greener pastures’ that a longer vision sees for us ‘on the other side of the fence.’

What to do? Hang on to what we know or jump to what we perceive to be the next best thing that could open up new opportunities, offer possibilities of less anxiety and overwhelm, or answer – finally – the question we often ask ourselves, “What should I do now?”

How many of us have sought out that be-all, end-all product, app, tool that would finally, once and for all, let us get our life or business on the right track. How many of us have looked for just the right mentor, coach or consultant to guide us to the approach or process that would offer the promise of enhanced self-care, increased productivity, greater revenue, etc.

Look, I can openly, honestly raise my hand and say that I have. I’ve spent quite a bit of time, energy and money on both personal and business development through the years. I did so with clear intent and, ultimately, mixed results. Some things I tried out were great, some not so. But they all have served to let me look inward to see what was right for me and where I want to be.

All of our time and effort to move from where we are to that next, desired level of happiness and success serves us well, in spite of the stress and whether the outcomes achieved are what we were looking for or not. And that’s why so many of us still strive to make changes.

Yet I pass along a word of caution. Don’t be too quick to step away from those routines that you have which do bring you comfort and create a space of certainty within which you can linger and give greater thought and form to what is right for you and where you want to be, doing what you want to do.

Discover a bit more about why it’s so important to honor these types of routines or habits in the video at the top of this page.

Great 1st video blog Tassey! You have inspired me to step up and think about my morning routines. My challenge for the next quarter will be creating new routines that set my day up for more positive energy…thanks!

Thank you, Luanne. Yes, I’ve been working since January to find those routines that I either need or work well for me in terms of productivity and wellness, and then trying to find new ones that can enhance what I’m already doing. I’ve put a special focus on productivity in my business day so I have more time in other parts of my life. Not an easy process, though!

I was excited to see that you have begun to video blog. My morning walk BEFORE email is a great time to get thinking in before doing.

Yes, I’m totally committed to bringing more video into my business so I can reach people in the medium that is preferred. It’s been an interesting journey on many ‘fronts,’ i.e. content, equipment, production, delivery, etc. But I am also having fun.

I love that you take walks to start your day. Such a good practice. I will usually break before or after lunch if my schedule permits and it serves to refresh my day and perspectives.

Great video message Tassey. Yes, my routines are so important. My breakfast shake to help me have and keep clear focus and my evening Sleepy time tea and gingersnaps with my sons as we watch something fun on TV. You could say these two routines are the “bookends” of my day 🙂

I love the fact that you see them as bookends. Something to look forward to in the morning for energizing what will come during the day and something to look forward to at night to close down the day and your thoughts. Love it!

    Hi Tassey,
My morning routine is non negotiable! I get up an hour before I have to start getting ready for work so that I can read and drink that first (wonderful!!) morning cup of coffee sitting in my favorite chair with my beloved cat purring next to me. I get so lost in the characters/story that takes me away from me. I guess a different sort of clearing of the mind…but one that works well for me 🙂

Janet, it definitely is clearing your mind and setting the tenor of the day. Your routine does give you the strength and comfort to tackle all that will come because you’ve taken care of yourself first and feel good from that. It’s that warm blanket that serves so well!

    Tassey,
Your advice on observing our routines is excellent. I have found that when I am on any kind of a trip, business or pleasure, I need to keep at least some of my morning routine or I, like your daughter, become grumpy. Thanks for such a wonderful gracious supportive video!

Thank you, BettyAnn, for sharing that you must also be sure to keep your routines, no matter where you are. I believe that this is so important to do as being away from our normal home and place of business unsettles us, even if not apparent. Having a routine that can be with you all the time helps a great deal. And, no grumpiness then!

Tassey, My routine does include a cup of coffee, milk, sugar, two candy canes for mint, heated very hot in the microwave. Then I sit down with Our Daily Bread and write out my daily prayer. First thing in the morning. Best way to start the day!

Shirley, what a wonderfully serene start to the day. I imagine that the writing of your daily prayer does a great deal to set a calm foundation for the work of the day.
